Dog Sitting Day 1: Introductions

Dog SittingIn life we have many “firsts”, first step, first word, first kiss, first speeding ticket, and so on. Today was my first time ever taking care of a dog in any way shape or form.

Growing up in a family where I was the only one not allergic to dogs or cats, we had no pets, not even a fish. Some might say that I was deprived, but I don’t feel that way at all nor do I wish I had a pet. In fact, I have come to realize that I don’t even like dogs. (I’ll pause now so you can step back and disbelief and reread that last phrase.) That’s right, I don’t like dogs. Now, don’t misread what I just wrote. I don’t dislike dogs either.

People often ask me how this could be the case? How is it possible to not have an affinity for “man’s best friend?” I don’t know, but you’re reading about such a specimen right now. Was I traumatized by dogs as a child? Not that I can remember (maybe I’m repressing that memory) nor have I had a terrible experience with dogs in the recent past.

How did I end up dog-sitting? Well, it’s pretty simple. Some friends of mine, former co-workers at GFA, will be out of town for a few days and needed someone to watch their dog while they were away. They actually asked a few others if they could fulfil the duty that I now hold, but after being shot down, they had to come to me. With no one else able to step-up the duties fell on yours truly!!

How was day 1? I opened the door and this young boston terrier was jumping around and full of energy. His name is Enoch and he is never short of energy. The vertical on this dog is crazy high! Standing only a couple feet high, he is able to jump to about 5 feet without issue.

I fed him, refilled his water and took him for a walk as well. He did his necessary bathroom duties on nearby trees and grassy plains too :)  This is one thing that still stupifies me -

As humans, how did we ever think and still find necessary to allow dogs to walk us and for us to have to pick up their fecal matter?!?!? HUH?!?! Seriously, who thought this was appropriate? Yet, it’s the norm!

We watched some TV, played some fetch and now he’s asleep below the bed I’m in. All in all, a pretty easy day and a pretty good dog.
